August 7th, 2014 - The sanction conflict between Russia and 'the West' continues to deepen, as the conflict in Eastern Ukraine does too. Interesting video about it here.


August 5th, 2014 - Over 50 African heads of state are in Washington DC for the first ever U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. Read about it here, or see this interesting take on African development by the deputy governor of Nigeria's central bank.

July 31st, 2014 - Argentina is defaulting on its debt. Again. This new clip by Al Jazeera English helps contextualize the story: Watch the news story here. Note the following graphic from The Economist, which shows how most of the top ten defaulting nations historically are Latin American nations.


July 29th, 2014 - Ebola: It's a deadly disease and spreading throughout a number of Western African nations. With the rise of international air travel and an incubation period of up to 3 weeks, worries are that the current outbreak could spread to numerous other nations. Watch the news story here.

July 22nd, 2014 - The story of the downed flight MH17 is a deeply disturbing and horrific one. We will discuss the global dynamics involved in this sad news story in class today. We will start off by watching these recent videos from CBC News: Here and here

July 15th, 2014 - 57,000 migrant children from Central America have crossed into the United States unaccompanied over the last six months. NPR's John Burnett has documented this harrowing journey here. And CBC's The Current has examined the issue in closer detail.

July 10th, 2014 - A global environmental organization is launching a campaign against a global toy company's recent decision to produce toys which feature the logo of a global oil giant. Read about it here.

July 8th, 2014 - Here's a news story about concurrent trade talks at the World Trade Organization aiming to lower tariffs on the international exchange of 'environmental goods'. Check out the article here.

July 3rd, 2014 -  What speaks of 'global connections' more so than the FIFA World Cup? Soccer is known around the world as 'the beautiful game'. Yet as this news story in The Guardian notes, a darker side of the game has reared its head at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil - racism. One group in the U.K is arguing that FIFA hasn't done enough to address this problem.
